Venture out of Florence and spend a relaxing day exploring two beautiful hilltop towns, where history and art blend with some dazzling views of the Tuscan countryside. Arezzo is a splendid town rich in artistic treasures, with the biggest draws being the beautiful frescoes by Renaissance artist Piero della Francesca and the spectacular square Piazza Grande with the elegant loggia designed by Vasari, the same architect who designed the Uffizi in Florence. About 30 km south of the city is Cortona, an enchanting walled town with a maze of steep cobblestone streets, hidden lanes and bustling little squares and home to beautiful Etruscan and Renaissance treasures.
